The Most Helpful Talk I Never Had

The Most Helpful Talk I Never Had

“I had a hard day,” I said to my husband as I sat down on the couch after reading the girls a story and kissing them goodnight.

My husband paused, then asked, “Want to talk about it?”

“Nope, I don’t think I do,” I replied, pulling a blanket over my lap.

“Okay,” he said.

He walked over and sat beside me on the couch. We sat in silence for a long time. He rested his hand over mine.

And as I sat there, processing my day, I thought about just how nice it was to know he was there for me. Willing to sit in the stillness. Not fixing. Not asking. Just giving me the comfort of knowing he was by my side while I worked out the hard.

Sometimes the most helpful talks are the ones where the other person says nothing at all.
