20 Apr I’m on My Way
I was running a few minutes late to meet a friend for coffee, so I decided to send her a quick text to let her know I was on the way.
When I arrived at the coffee shop, we ordered lattes and settled into a cozy booth in the corner. As we began chatting, my friend pointed to her phone and said, “By the way, your text was hilarious.”
Confused, I looked at my phone and realized that in my haste to send the message, I had written the wrong word. Instead of saying “I’m on my way,” I had written “I’m in my way.” We laughed together.
On my drive home, I thought more about the text message and reflected on how often we do get in our own way. Sometimes we dwell on the past, replaying mistakes and “if onlys…” and wishing we could change the outcome. Other times, we worry about the future and allow the uncertainty and “what ifs…” to paralyze us. These unhelpful thoughts can keep us from moving forward and reaching our goals.
Yet, it doesn’t have to be like this. By recognizing the thoughts that are getting in our way, we can instead change our ways of thinking and focus on more helpful responses that empower us to move forward with a more positive mindset. And in doing so, we can shift from being “in our way” to “on our way.” Sometimes we really are the only obstacle standing in our own way.
