11 Jan Unrecognized Lasts
During Ella’s recent dental appointment, the dentist informed her that she has two baby teeth left to lose.
Two little teeth.
The tooth fairy will pay two more midnight visits.
I’ll wake her up two more times, exclaiming with feigned surprise,“Oh, look! The tooth fairy visited!”
And she will give me a knowing smile two more times as she reaches over to find the tooth fairy’s letter and shiny coins.
The remaining count is one I know: Two more tooth fairy memories to tuck away in my heart.
Yet so often, we don’t know an ending is forever until long after it has happened.
And maybe that is a gift.
Knowing it is the last time might make it impossible for us to ever let go.
