When our realtor walked us through the house we have now lived in for nearly ten years, he saw me hesitating as I stared at the dated flooring and the peeling cabinets. I still remember his encouraging words: “It could be really beautiful. Can you see it?”
I shut my eyes and did my best to imagine the potential of what this house could become. I couldn’t see everything, but I could see something. And that was enough to begin.
Over the past ten years, room by room, our family has put love and effort into revealing the home’s beauty. We’ve worked together to pick out new flooring and cabinets, apply fresh paint, and install new fixtures. And it has become beautiful. Updated and functional, the house has become our home.
I look at the girls running through the halls, no longer the tiny toddlers they were at the beginning of this remodeling journey. Just as the realtor’s words inspired me to see the potential in our home, I hope the girls generalize these lessons we’ve learned together to see the possibility in what’s around them. It’s a reminder to look for the good, knowing that what you look for you often find.
Things might need a little love and effort, but so often potential is there, waiting to be discovered.
It’s a lesson that started with a house that gently echoes into all corners of life.
It could be really beautiful.
